Other Professional and Hobby Interests
Professional Interest
Here I would like to describe my less formal professional side. It still has to do with my personal side, which is in a good part related to my IT profession. I like to study—both formally and informally, in various subjects; and do more or less of it at differing times. I do extensive hands-on—when possible in an attempt to learn the subject in case better and maybe advance my professional life. Even some of my hobbies may hopefully lead to business and/or professional prospects.
Midrange.
I have my own AS/400 Model 9406-170—which I purchased for $75.00, with OS V5R3 and all the normally provided software that comes with it, and have installed and configured it. I have changed and upgraded Hard Drives, worked with them via TTS, setup configuration settings and apply PTFs
PC Based:
Routinely assemble PCs—for personal use--mostly, as well as my own Laptop. Always assemble my own servers and configure them. Have used dedicated array controllers and the various Hot-Swappable SCSI drives. Configure them and experienced with failed drives and its reconstruction.
Microcontrollers. Have been working with microcontrollers at various levels—from the first Intel 8080, and with a varied line of Single-Chip computers like the Motorola 6511, PICs and others.
Software:
Working with CP/M and Z DOS did some programming and development in
- Assembly programming on Intel I-8080 and Zilog Z-80 based microcomputers
- Basic and Pascal
I am familiar and done some work with common microcomputer based “database programming” (DOS and Windows)--Access, DBase and FoxPro. Mostly have been accessing and migrating its data to Sybase and MS SQL Servers—through Infomaker and other tools.
I have also worked with most “legacy” Word Processors, Spreadsheets, Communications and others tools.
I have also been very active with various other Software Development Tools that include: CASE (Easy Case), Fuzzy Logic, 4GL languages--PowerBuilder and InfoMaker.
Have experimented and worked with various RDBS—installing, populating and accessing, including Sybase SQL server, MS SQL Server—various versions, Oracle and DB2; all under Windows servers.
Have done some hands-on DOS Commands, PC based various Cobol, C and C++, PHP, and Pearl.
Have done quite a bit of GIS through Maptitude, and have used (lightly) ERSI Arc Info.
With the objective of getting into the Mainframe arena, I installed and play with the MVS/JCL through “Hercules”.
My Network
Most of my software is Microsoft since I belong to the Microsoft Partner Network. My “laboratory” site used to consist in:
Two Port Netgear Router
3 100/1Gig Switches, all cat 6 & 6e
UPS APC 3000 Smart with Extended Battery Pack
Servers:
1 AS/400 iSeries eServer 9406-2292
2 Database Servers
Small Business Server
Web Server
Backup Server
Telephony Server
Electronics.
I have some good concepts of electronics and digital system but missing knowledge in key areas. Have done much assembling and soldering of components as well as troubleshooting—with the early microcomputers based on the S-100 and in dealing with microcontroller boards.
Personal Interests
Radio Control hobby
Planes, Trains, Boats and Cars. I always looked into this hobby, but in really haven’t been able to practice much for many years. My hope is that when conditions improve, I will really get into them.
History WWII
This is a “hobby” of mine for a long time, and even though it gets into History in general—which I love, my specialization is in military history and in particular the Second World War.
Shooting
Love shooting and guns, with emphasis on Air guns, and WWII weapons-all types and guns.
